Timberwolves acquire Cody Williams, John Konchar in trade for Josh Green from Jazz

The Minnesota Timberwolves agreed to trade 3-and-D wing Josh Green to the Utah Jazz in a deal for Cody Williams and John Konchar on Friday, August 28.

The Timberwolves have reportedly decided to retain No. 10 pick of the 2024 NBA draft, Cody Williams and waive Konchar, while spreading his salary across several seasons.

An NBA insider, Shams Charania, who reports for ESPN, said, before acquiring forward Jonathan Kuminga, the Timberwolves explored multiple trade options for Green.

They found a landing spot for him with the Jazz, who were looking to add another 3-and-D wing.

Trading Green’s whopping $14.7 million deal provides Minnesota a breathing space to sign Kuminga to a two-year contract valued at $12.4 million.

The latest addition of Kuminga, who is due more than $6 million next season, pushed roughly $2 million over the cap.

That means the signing couldn’t become official until Timberwolves made an additional move to remain under the second apron.

Monday, August 31, serves as the deadline for NBA teams to waive-and-stretch a player in order to create cap savings this season, but players must first clear a 48-hour waiver period.

So if Minnesota wanted to utilise this route, Saturday, August 29, was the deadline.

On the other hand, Konchar is set to make $6.2 million next season, while Williams is slated to earn $6 million in net salary.

That gives the Timberwolves roughly $2.5 million in cap space from this trade.
