Ex-Rockstar director shrugs off 'GTA 6' leaks as 'nothing burger' ahead of Netflix debut

Grand Theft Auto 6 ‘Extended Look’ premiere is just two days away as Rockstar Games scrambles to find out who leaked gameplay leaks.

The last week, internet was stormed with an individual or group known as CyberLeek, releasing alleged clips of GTA 6 gameplay that include maps and videos.

A viral X (formerly called Twitter) post by Obbe Vermeij, a former Rockstar North director at North (a studio commonly referred to which is based in Edinburgh), called recent GTA 6 gameplay leaks "nothing burger". 

“Calm down everybody. The leaks are a nothing burger,” wrote Vermeij.

Vermeij then explained why the recent leaks weren’t a big deal, as no major story spoilers or huge reveals surfaced, only the unfinished footage that wasn’t intended for public viewing before August 27 premiere.

“90% of future players don’t spend their time on the internet looking for video snippets. They don’t have the time and don’t want spoilers,” he continued.

Recalling his experience of the 2024 nightmare, when GTA 6: San Andreas was added, he said, “I was there during Hot Coffee. It was a nightmare for management (R*NewYork) but didn’t affect us (R*North) much.

"The current leaks are far less consequential than HC was."

Vermeij concluded his post with a surprise prediction that the GTA 6 buzz is going to last over 15 years: “It looks like gta6 will be phenomenal and sell for the next 15 years or so. The leaks are just a tiny blip.”

The leeks led to Take-Two Interactive, parent company behind the most anticipated game of the decade, GTA 6, publisher Rockstar Games, filing for subpoenas for Microsoft, Discord, and FitHub.

Rockstar Games is set to release the 'Extended Look' of GTA 6 on Netflix on August 27, 2026.
