What costume did Target remove? Full Halloween outfit controversy explained

Target has pulled out a children’s Halloween costume from its stores and website after widespread criticism that the design evoked racist blackface imagery.

The costume, named the “Kids’ glows under blacklight circus clown Halloween costume bodysuit,” is a black and orange bodysuit with a ruffled collar, black gloves, a miniature top hat, and a face covering with an exaggerated wide grin and large teeth. The outfit was priced at $25.

For marketing purposes, Target used a Black child modeling the outfit, which sparked outrage on social media with critics saying it mirrors offensive depictions from the Jim Crow era.

Following backlash, Target issued a statement apologising for the release of the controversial product.

The retailer said: “As a company, we know we got this wrong, and we are deeply sorry. The costume is offensive and should never have been part of our assortment.”

The company clarified that all sales for the costume has stopped and an internal investigation is ongoing for how it made it onto shelves.

“We know this is especially hurtful for our Black guests, team members, and partners. Removing the costume is an important step, and we are looking closely at how this happened and what needs to change,” Target added.
