Lena Dunham, an American writer and director well known for her television series Girls, recently revealed the reason behind her long break from acting.
In a recent interview with The Times, she noted that criticism was the catylst behind her decision and admitted, "I didn’t really understand how to distinguish between what was and wasn’t necessary for the public."
Adding to the chat she revealed her devestation over her past trauma with Girls saying, "I felt confused about how I was supposed to respond. I thought if I explain properly who I am, or give a glimpse of who I am, people are going to have a different perception of me, that we would be friends. But no one cares — and that’s fine.”
She further added, “I always joke that I need a T-shirt that says, ‘I survived New York media in 2012 and all I got was this lousy T-shirt.’ And all I got was this lousy PTSD.”
In another interview with The New Yorker, Dunham also explained that she doesn’t want to work on any series related to body shamming, saying, “I was not willing to have another experience like what I’d experienced around Girls at this point in my life,” as the actress faced lots of body shamming on the show.
While wrapping up she also wore her heart on her sleeve and said, “Physically, I was just not up for having my body dissected again.”
However, Girls star is soon returning to screens, in Netflix series Too Much, starring Meg Stalter as Jessica, a New Yorker who moves to London after a breakup, where she meets Felix played by Will Sharpe and sparks a romance. The series is set to premiere on July 10.
