James Gunn details how Superman’s Krypto the superdog was modelled after his dog Ozu

James Gunn’s latest film Superman pays tribute to his rescue dog Ozu.

In the new film about the Man of Steel, Gunn included a white fluffy dog called Krypto, who was modelled off of his own dog Ozu. The dog is David Corenswet's Superman’s Kryptonian pal Krypto the Superdog.

"When I first adopted Ozu, I was starting to write the Superman script. Ozu was such a terrible, uncontrollable dog — tearing up our entire house — I thought, 'What if he had superpowers? We'd be screwed.' And thus, the filmic Krypto was born. He really just gave the script that unusual aspect that made it fun to write," Gunn told People of his unruly pet.

In October 2024, the director revealed that Ozu came from a “hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs & never knew human beings” adding that he “destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture - he even ate my laptop.” he noted that it was a long time before the dog trusted the family enough to let them touch him.

Both Krypto’s looks and behaviour have bee modelled after Ozu, with his fur color changed to white.

"We'd captured Ozu's body and used it as the model for Krypto, just changing the color of his fur. We also used the hundreds of video references for the way Ozu played and fought and bit my feet for Krypto's onscreen actions," Gunn explained.

Fans will get to see Ozu as Krypto in Superman on July 11.
