Ahead of season three, Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has teased that he had flirted with the possibility of a sequel.

In an interview with The Korea Times, the director said, “I have considered the idea of a spin-off. There were moments during production when I grew curious myself.”

It is not the first time the South Korean filmmaker entertained the idea of a sequel in Squid Game universe.

“If I make [a] spin-off, it will be a story happening between Season 1 and 2. There [was] a three-year gap between Season 1 and 2. So, I want to show what they did for those times," he said previously.

Elsewhere in the interview, Hwang closed the door on season four, stressing the upcoming season will be the final in the series. “After watching Season 3, some may think there’s room for a Season 4, while others may feel there’s no need for one."

Squid Game's season three will be streaming on Netflix on June 27, 2025.
