King Charles’s clarification on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal status was supposedly done in a bid to keep the Sussexes in control, especially now that they are back in Britain.

Sources had previously shared that Buckingham Palace was “spooked” by how the public had reacted to the comeback of Harry and Meghan. Moreover, the King did not want anymore controversy since he was getting queries on where do the Sussexes stand.

However, the move seemed to have backfired, as insiders cited by royal expert Richard Palmer in The i Paper have disclosed concerning news for Buckingham Palace.

Nearly a week of tensions after the letter was issued, a source close to the Sussexes said that “they no longer feel bound to the terms of the ‘Megxit’ agreement”.

The couple had famously agreed to the Sandringham Agreement when they stepped down from their senior royal positions in 2020, after their taxpayer-funded security was removed.

Senior Palace officials had said that the couple would be obligated to follow “a set of values known as the Nolan Principles” like the royal members are supposed to honour. This meant that they couldn’t be involvement in political controversy and should support UK government policy on international stage.

Moreover, they couldn’t use their royal titles for any commercial purposes.
