Squid Game star Park Gyu-young has revealed how grateful she is to star as a guard in the hit show.
In Squid Game, the guards of the sadistic game shoot competitors dead if they fail to complete the game. The guards wear pink overalls with masks that completely cover the face.
Season two of the show explored backstories of the guards as well, giving fans a look into Park's character Kang No-eul’s heartbreaking story.
“Even though we saw a lot of pink guards in season one we didn’t get to see the human side of them,” Park explained, per The Mirror.
“We just saw them as very merciless people, but they must have their backstories. They must have their emotions. So, I was very honored to be able to play this character, No-eul, in seasons two and three,” she reflected.
“The backstories of the pink guards and the emotional landscape that they hold… I think it was very meaningful that we got a peek into the other side of the system,” she added.
Elsewhere, Park noted that it’s hard to breathe and act while wearing the masks, but it’s a small price to pay for starring in Netflix’s biggest show ever.
Park said, “I know it’s a good-looking costume, but if you really wear it… it’s actually really hot,” she said.
“It’s kind of hard to breathe and even hard to talk in those masks,” she continued.
Park Gyu-young added: “But, I was really thrilled to wear those costumes because the pink guard is one of the most iconic characters in Squid Game. So I didn’t care about it.”
