Meghan Markle has opened up about what she would do if she had another chance to shape the public narrative about her. In answering the question, she shared a wise piece of advice her pal Serena Williams shared with her.
Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, appeared on the Aspire With Emma Grede podcast and talked about the immense scrutiny she has faced since tying the knot with Prince Harry in 2018.
The couple has faced considerable online backlash since they stepped down as working royals in 2020 and moved to California. In an attempt to lay out their side of things, they gave a candid interview to Oprah, in which they claimed that they were mistreated by the Royal Family and had no choice but to leave.
Discussing the public response, Emma asked Meghan what she would do if she could “rewrite” the public narrative. In what seemed like a swipe at the Royal Family, the Duchess replied, “I would ask people to tell the truth.”
Emma remarked, “I would just get so angry if I felt that everyone was lying about me all the time.”
The CEO and cofounder of Khloé Kardashian’s Good American clothing line asked, “Is there ever a part of you that’s like, ‘Just leave me alone?’”
The Suits actress explained that she has done “a lot of selfwork,” and explained that there are “peaks and valleys” to having a public profile.
“You go, ‘What’s the why?’ It’s happening for a reason,” the As Ever founder explained.
Meghan continued, “My dear friend Serena … she told me years ago, ‘A lie can’t live forever.”
“Eight years is a long time, but not forever,” the duchess noted.
Meghan Markle and Serena Williams have been friends for about a decade and the tennis alum even attended the Suits star’s 2018 wedding to Prince Harry.
