King Charles III was anointed and crowned on May 6, 2023 in Britain's biggest ceremonial event for seven decades. During the solemn two-hour service, elements of which date back to the time of King William the Conqueror in 1066, Charles' second wife Camilla was also crowned queen.

In 1993, The "Camillagate" tapes - embarrassingly intimate conversations between Charles and Camilla recorded from 1989 - were published in the tabloids. In December, the separation of Prince Charles and Diana was announced.

Camilla and Andrew Parker Bowles divorced in 1995 and he remarried the following year. Charles and Diana were divorced in August 1996 after years of acrimonious marital problems.

Diana blamed Charles for his refusal to end his affair with his long-term lover, Camilla. Charles said he had remained faithful in the marriage “until it became irretrievably broken down”. On Aug. 31, 1997, Diana died in a car crash in Paris
