After the Emmy nominations were unveiled on Tuesday (July 15), Hollywood conversations quickly turned to the snubs and surprises.

Michael Schneider is the executive editor of television at Variety and has been covering the television industry for 25 years.

He told Reuters, "Some big names that we were surprised weren't recognized, like Tina Fey for 'The Four Seasons'.There's always big names that you're sort of shocked aren't there. And then other shows that were canceled but still got some Emmy love, including Netflix's 'The Residence' and Uzo Aduba, who was nominated for actress. So some nice pleasant surprises and then some some other big history being made, too. You've got Kathy Bates nominated for 'Matlock', which makes her the oldest actress ever to get an Emmy nomination. She was nominated in drama."

There were also some shake-ups in the traditional Emmy line-up, according to Schneider.

"'The Bear', which was a huge hit the past couple of years for FX, still got 13 nominations, which is pretty good, but didn't get nearly as many nominations as it has in the past. So you saw a lot of shows that once upon a time did huge numbers not doing as well this time. Probably one of the biggest snubs was in drama where 'Squid Game', by far the biggest show of the year, was not nominated in best drama," he said.

Schneider highlighted the ongoing debate over binging a series versus the drip-feed strategy.

He said, "A good example of that this year was 'The Pitt' on HBO Max.That medical drama with Noah Wyle started out sort of slow but really picked up momentum, and by the end was one of the most lauded shows on television and it was rewarded with quite a few nominations today. 'The White Lotus' is another good example of a show that over time, as people watch week after week, they really, really embrace it and that show is done supremely well at the Emmys, too. So you got to argue that maybe going week to week is the way to go now, if you want some Emmy love."
