Este Haim reveals Callum Turner's intense method on ‘One Night Only'

Este Haim had one mission while filming One Night Only: make Callum Turner break character.

She failed spectacularly.

Speaking to People magazine, at the film’s New York premiere on August 3, Haim, 40, admitted she repeatedly tried to get Turner, 36, to drop his serious on-set persona. 

The British actor, however, wasn’t giving her the satisfaction.

“Callum’s just funny,” Haim said. “I kept trying to get him to break character on set, and he wouldn’t do it. That was, like, my one goal, and I never achieved it.”

Turner’s commitment makes more sense once you hear how he approaches his roles. 

In One Night Only, he plays a man living in an alternate United States where premarital s*x is illegal — except for one 12-hour window each year.

During a conversation with costar Monica Barbaro and director Will Gluck, Turner explained that he stays in character even when cameras stop rolling, particularly when an American accent is involved.

“I worked with a woman called Brett Tyne, who I met on Masters of the Air,” he recalled. 

“I remember I walked into the office and I said, ‘Well, this is how I like to do it. I like to stay in the accent the whole time, so can you help me get there?’ And she was like, ‘You’re never going to be able to do it.’ And I said, ‘You want to bet?’ “

Turner said the approach helps him avoid constantly switching between himself and the character, although it requires “a lot of prep work and a lot of concentration.”

Luckily, Haim still had something to celebrate: Turner and Barbaro’s chemistry.

“Yeah. Made our job so easy,” Christopher Stracey added.

One Night Only is now in theaters.
