Diego Luna has shared he was stunned to learn that the director of Rogue One chose him for the Star Wars epic based on the steamy indie classic.
The 45-year-old Mexican actor and director showed up on the latest episode of Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend, where he said he was surprised that his breakout role of Tenoch Iturbide in Y Tu Mama Tambien helped him get the part of Cassian Andor in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
Luna revealed that Rogue One director Gareth Edwards set up a call with him, and he “wasn’t sure what the meeting was about.”
He quipped, "I was sitting there going, like, 'What does he want from me?' Does he want the number of an actor or does he want me to help him with Gael [García Bernal]?"
Notably, Edwards was not looking for what the Narcos: Mexico star thought of; instead, the director wanted him to audition for Rogue One after seeing his acting skills in the 2001 cult coming-of-age classic Y Tu Mama Tambien.
"The director said to me, 'I want to do a film in this universe that tonally feels very realistic, close to what you guys did in Y Tu Mamá También.’ And I was like, 'What?'" Lune recalled.
Previously, he opened up to Vanity Fair and said Edward sought inspiration for Rogue One from Y Tu Mamá También, quipping, "He wanted to make a very particular Star Wars movie, with a different style of acting and hyperrealistic tone bordering on naturalism.”
“He wanted to create something that was close to being almost like a documentary in its tone. 'I want them to improvise, to take over the characters, the dynamics between them. I’d love to feel like I’m watching something like Y Tu Mamá También,' he told us,” Luna mentioned.
