Shakira makes bold remarks about living in America

Shakira broke her silence on the ongoing immigrants' protest and Donald Trump’s immigration policies.

During a recent chat with BBC News, the 48-year-old singer shared her thoughts and reflected on her own experience as an immigrant.

“I was only 19 when I moved to the US, like many other Colombian immigrants who come to this country looking for a better future," she told the outlet, adding that she learned English by reading poetry and lyrics from Leonard Cohen, Walt Whitman, and Bob Dylan to “understand how the English language works within songwriting.”

After taking his seat in the White House, Trump pushed for stricter immigration policies, the Hips Don't Lie hitmaker said that living here “means living in constant fear. And it’s painful to see.”

The Whenever, Wherever singer urged people to stay united and stand up for human rights, “Now, more than ever, we have to remain united. Now, more than ever, we have to raise our voices and make it very clear that a country can change its immigration policies, but the treatment of all people must always be humane.”

Earlier this year, she dedicated her Grammy win “to all my immigrant brothers and sisters in this country.”
